In today's fast-paced world, the term "processed food" is tossed around often, accompanied by advice to consume less of it.But what exactly are processed, minimally processed, and ultra-processed foods, and how do they influence our health?


Processed and Ultra-Processed Foods 


Unprocessed or minimally processed foods are those in their natural or nearly natural state, with intact vitamins and nutrients. Think of carrots, apples, raw chicken, melons, and raw, unsalted nuts. Processing these foods involves minimal alterations, such as removal of inedible parts or freezing. 

On the flip side, processed foods have added substances like salt, oil, or sugar. Examples include canned fish, fruits in syrup, and freshly made bread. They typically contain two or three ingredients. 

Ultra-processed foods, the main focus here, go beyond. Laden with additives like sugar, salt, fat, and artificial colors, they're concocted from extracted substances like fats, starches, and added sugars.

 Frozen meals, soft drinks, hot dogs, packaged cookies – these fall into the ultra-processed category. 


The Impact on Our Health:


 According to a study nearly 58% of calories consumed in the US come from ultra-processed foods. They contribute a staggering 90% of the energy derived from added sugars. The study flags ultra-processed foods as potential culprits for health issues. 

A Cell Metabolism study compared ultra-processed and unprocessed diets on calorie intake and weight gain. Results showed subjects consumed about 500 more calories daily on the ultra-processed diet, gaining weight in the process. The study hints that limiting ultra-processed foods could be key to preventing and treating obesity. 


Words of Caution and Limitations



While studies provide valuable insights, it's essential to approach them with caution. Small sample sizes, variations in individual responses, and controlled settings may impact real-world applicability. A study  covering over 100,000 adults, associates higher ultra-processed food consumption with increased risks of cardiovascular diseases, suggesting an association.

To make informed choices, we should aim to avoid or limit ultra-processed foods.
